Is all mold toxic?

So, you’ve got some mold growing in your basement. How do you know if it’s harmful? Is all mold toxic? It’s crazy to think that there are over 400,000 different species of mold! Thankfully, though, not all types of molds are toxic. Some types of mold can be very dangerous for your health while others are harmless. How do you know the difference? We’ll review the 3 types of mold below.

Allergenic Molds

Allergenic molds, in small quantities, are not typically harmful, but can make a person miserable. Tolerance of these molds depends on the person, the level of allergen, and the species of allergenic mold. People who suffer from allergenic mold allergies have symptoms like a runny nose, watery eyes, postnasal drip, cough, dry and scaly skin, and sneezing. Those with asthma may also find that they start wheezing, get shortness of breath, and chest tightness when exposed to this type of mold. One example of an allergic mold is aspergillus.

Pathogenic Molds

Pathogenic molds more harmful than allergenic molds and can cause a serious infection in humans. Unlike other types of mold, pathogenic molds affect people with both weak and strong immune systems. These types of mold actually attack a healthy immune system and make the exposed person extremely ill. The mold grows inside the human body and causes more complications for the patient when it goes untreated. This type of mold can cause fungal or mold-related illnesses that are classified as mycoses and results from fungi actually growing on or inside the body.

Toxic Molds

While toxic molds are similar to pathogenic molds, they are two very different types. Toxic molds are far more dangerous to people and can lead to many complications and a variety of illnesses. Toxic molds release a chemical called mycotoxins into the air. Breathing in those toxins causes many different health problems, ranging from a temporary irritation to immunosuppression, cancers, and neurological disorders. Toxic molds can cause temporary and even permanent health problems if they are not taken care of as soon as possible.
